I am installing a new Hunter Ceiling Fan into an old wiring system (armored cable). The wires coming out of the ceiling are 1) blackish 2) black with what looks like white paint on it that is worn down and 3) blackish with a tiny bit of the white worn paint on it. The ceiling fan wires are 1) white 2) black and 3) white and black striped. What do I connect with what? The instructions only tell me that my ceiling should have one black and one white wire. Please help!

Before you worry about the wiring, check the fixture box. Since you have armored cable, it is likely the box is just as old (or you may not even have a fixture box). Standard fixture boxes are not approved for Ceiling Fans. Please do not ignore the 3 or 4 warnings about this that I know were included with your fan.

Now that you have addressed that, I hope, on to the wiring.

Double check the coloring. I am guessing that one of the wires has a red color to it (two blacks and a white or one black and two whites is extremely unlikely). The white wire will connect to the fan’s white wire. You need to find out which of the other 2 wires is controlled by the wall switch. This will connect to both of the black fan wires. Cap off the other wire.

This is just a guess based on your description. If you include a photo of the ceiling wires, I may be able to do better.
