Wiring a switch to a ceiling fan?
I’m trying to wire a combo dimmer fan control switch to an existing ceiling fan. The switch has a black, red and blue wire coming from it. I was wondering how I would wire this to my existing fixture? I ran 3 conductor wire from the ceiling fan to the switch, it’s not connected yet though. Thank you.
If both the fan and light are wired to the same wall switch a speed control should not be used. DO NOT under ANY circumstances allow a fan motor to be controlled by a dimmer switch. You will burn the motor.
If a fan light is controlled independently by a wall switch, and incandescent bulbs are used, the wall switch may be replaced by a dimmer switch to allow a more diverse control of the light, or a speed control switch can be used, but only if independently!!!
if you go to DIYadvise it will give you all the instructions you can print out. I’d guide you through it, but is way too much to write here. Anywho. Once in DIY, click on electrical & go from there. Everything you need is right there. Good luck. Please don’t get electricuted…:)

If the fan itself isn’t wired for that purpose, you can’t do it. Putting a dimmer on a fan motor will burn it out otherwise.

That switch needs 3 wires :’power in’, ‘Light out’, ‘fan out’.
The switch instructions will tell you which is which. ( I’d bet on black for power in.)
Keep track of what colors you connect to what.
In the box for the fan light, you connect incoming power’ (black or red),
to switch ‘Power in’, light out and fan out to the colored wires
from the fan and light units, and the white in the box to the white
neutral that came in with the boxes incoming power wire.
(There might well be other ‘power and neutral wires to other circuits
in that box. Leave or reconnect them as before.

Look on the markings on the switch or in the directions that came with it (why do so many people on here not read the directions that ALWAYS come with the stuff they buy?). One of the leads off the combo would be for the dimmer connection to the light, the other will be power to the fan control.
If you lost the direction sheet, you can usually find them on-line by googling the product manufacturer and part number off the unit.

I’ve been an electrician for 30 years but I STILL read the directions when I install anything.
